As the sun shined down in Columbus’ Arena District, VIP, media, staff, food trucks, product booths, and music lovers alike gathered to watch Banners take the Pepsi Stage to kick off Promowest Production’s inaugural music festival. The Liverpool, England band’s softer Young the Giant-like sound along with their charisma created a warm welcome for Promowest Fest goers. Off in the distance at the Columbus Makes Art Stage, Athens, Ohio natives Red Wanting Blue is heard with their twangy rock tunes. Back at the Pepsi Stage, also Liverpool, England based band, The Wombats, rocked the crowd with their psychedelic new wave vibe.
Next on the schedule at the Columbus Makes Art Stage came X Ambassadors– an alternative rock band from Ithaca, New York famous for their hits “Renegades,” “Jungle,” and “Unsteady” from the new film, Me Before You. Sam Harris absolutely won my heart over with his powerful vocals and his brother (whom has been blind since birth) completely killed it on the keyboard. Easily my favorite performance of the day.
Next on the Pepsi Stage: Noel Gallagher– a horrifically familiar face from the band Oasis. Unable to do work due to his particular preference of having the media area off limits, we were displeased with Gallagher from the start. His mediocre set of solo works accompanied by Oasis covers (even though he supposedly hates his former band), did not help and was not anything special. Noel Gallagher lives up to his arrogant and rude stigma both on the stage and off. “Anyway, here’s ‘Wonderwall…'” With dusk approaching, Fitz and the Tantrums closed out the Columbus Makes Art Stage for the night.
Ryan Adams took the Pepsi Stage before The Flaming Lips and created an exciting environment for the crowd. Sound wise, I found him to be alright- not too exciting, but not by any means poor. The crowd seemed to thoroughly enjoy his set, though. To close out the first day of the festival, The Flaming Lips put on a psychedelic vibe party. Caterpillar stockings/jacket, giant butterflies, a lovable sun, dangling rain lights, confetti, hundreds of giant balloons, and an inflatable rainbow assembled together to bring joy and harmony to Promowest Fest.
