As the lights shift in color, a baby’s mobile rotates slowly over a giant crib. Smoke begins to pour out from behind giant children’s block toys that read “CRYBABY,” and as the lights rise in intensity, Melanie Martinez pushes away the crib’s wall and steps onto the stage.
Clad in white crew socks, a light blue dress with a fuzzy teal trim, and a matching shawl-like piece, Martinez begins yet another show on her Cry Baby Tour.
Her vibrant and visually pleasing live shows, as shown in the tour’s Youtube trailer, will be coming to Columbus’ EXPRESS LIVE! on Friday, July 29. Previous stops on the latter stretch of the tour will include Chicago, Cleveland and Pittsburgh, to name a few. Martinez has also included new merchandise just in the time for the show, from beanies featuring “Cry Baby” spelled out in toy blocks to shirts of a sad birthday girl smoking a cigarette with a beheaded teddy bear sitting on a plate before her.
The Cry Baby tour has been in support of her titular debut album, which dropped August 14, 2015 and featured the singles “Pity Party,” “Soap” and “Sippy Cup.”
According to Martinez’s website, the album “debuted at #5 on the Top Albums Chart, #6 on the Billboard 200 and #1 on the Billboard “Current Alternative Album” chart.” The highly-acclaimed concept album follows the tale of Cry Baby, a fictional character that Martinez claims stems from herself and from her life experiences involving her vulnerable, cry baby side.
While the album’s childlike themes and song names encompass the initial layer of the album, a contrast exists with the song’s deeper meanings of adult topics such as heartbreak and self-discovery as Martinez has experienced it. To further tie in with Cry Baby’s childlike charm, the album’s CD and vinyl releases include exclusive packaging with a storybook that goes along with the album, illustrated by Chloe Tersigni.
