Frank Ocean’s many antics on playing his fans have finally come to a close as reports from the New York Times says we’ll have the follow up to Channel Orange Friday.
Boys Don’t Cry will be released exclusively on Apple Music for two weeks starting August 5 before being released on other digital services.
“I got two versions. I got twoooo versions. #ISSUE1 #ALBUM3 #JULY2015 #BOYSDONTCRY”
These words haunted the internet as many Frank Ocean fans, such as myself, were finally issued some sort of indication that the follow-up to the Grammy-nominated record Channel Orange would finally be here.
Sure enough, it never arrived. July 2015 came and went, and we still didn’t have that damn new Frank Ocean album.
Well, fast forward to July 2016 and we still didn’t have anything … until a cryptic video appeared on the mysterious Ocean affiliated URL boysdontcry.co on the first day of August finally revealed a looped live stream video of weird sounds and, occasionally, someone cutting wood.
The live stream had the Apple Music logo in the corner, so it had to be something, right? Thankfully, it was. Ocean’s sophomore record Boys Don’t Cry will officially be released Friday exclusively on Apple Music along with the eponymous magazine seen in the picture Ocean posted a year ago.
Ocean has been on and off social media for a while now, addressing issues such as the 2016 presidential race and the recent shooting at the Pulse nightclub in Orlando, but other than that he has stayed relatively quiet. Small collaborations with Kanye West on The Life of Pablo and James Blake on The Colour in Everything have given us bits and pieces of Frank’s voice, but zero new, original music.
I’m happy to say that we will finally have the chance to listen to what’s been going through Ocean’s head since we last left him on Channel Orange.
Who knows, we may have another masterpiece on our hands.
Keep an eye out for Frank Ocean’s Boys Don’t Cry exclusively on Apple Music 8/5.
